{"id":1932,"date":"2016-01-27T20:52:29","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T20:52:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.leithcars.com\/?p=1932"},"modified":"2016-01-27T20:52:29","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T20:52:29","slug":"usdot-gives-americas-roads-a-grade-of-d-in-2015-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.leithcars.com\/?p=1932","title":{"rendered":"USDOT Gives America\u2019s Roads a Grade of D+ In 2015 Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suffocating traffic, crumbling roads, failing bridges, and a shortage in funding earned the U.S.A. a grade of D+ from the U.S. Department of Transportation in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/sites\/dot.gov\/files\/docs\/Draft_Beyond_Traffic_Framework.pdf\">2015 report, \u201cBeyond Traffic.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To be clear, we wanted an A or even A+, as in, \u201cGood job, America; you aced it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the USDOT gave a grim appraisal of a transportation system that will rapidly deteriorate in the next few decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were the main points in this study?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16<sup>th<\/sup> is how we rank globally in the quality of our roads<\/li>\n<li>23 years is how long we\u2019ve gone without increasing the Federal gas tax<\/li>\n<li>$36.8 billion is how much we\u2019re short in infrastructure improvements<\/li>\n<li>40 hours is the average American\u2019s time spent in traffic annually<\/li>\n<li>70 million people will be added to the U.S. in the next 30 years<\/li>\n<li>$121 billion is the annual cost of traffic to the economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>What do all those numbers mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A D+, Jimmy, a D+. If our roads were an assignment that we were turning in at school, we would have gotten a nearly failing grade written on it with a big red marker.<\/p>\n<p>And remember, this is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Transportation<\/a>, not some random blog on the Internet. While you\u2019d expect that the U.S. would be number one in the world given our superpower status and how much we like to drive, you\u2019d be wrong. No A+ for us. Just a 16<sup>th<\/sup> place certificate, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.driving.co.uk\/news\/news-united-arab-emirates-tops-the-league-table-for-worlds-best-roads\/\">right behind Luxembourg.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luxembourg, y\u2019all. That\u2019s a country with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luxembourg\">gross domestic product of about $57 billion<\/a>, which is only slightly more than Lowe\u2019s Home Improvement\u2019s gross revenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What should we do about this?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are you sitting down? Because we need to spend some money. Finland has better roads than we do. So does Taiwan, Oman, France, Austria, and Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>It is not fun to be on a bridge when it collapses. It\u2019s even less fun when a chunk of asphalt smashes through your windshield on the highway.
