Showroom and Tell: The 2014 Range Rover Sport

We hear a lot of people on Twitter dreaming about the day they get a Range Rover. People vow that one day they will own a Range Rover, or that the next car they whip will definitely be a Range Rover. Having plenty of Rovers for ourselves to test drive, we understand where they’re coming from. It makes sense then for our Showroom and Tell blog post to be about an SUV so widely-regarded as the standard for status, luxury, comfort, competence, and accomplishment. Today’s blog post is about the 2014 Range Rover Sport.

The Sport is a relatively new designation that first appeared in 2005. The second generation of the Sport was introduced in 2013 by Bond actor Daniel Craig, and showcased a more thorough redesign than the facelift of 2009. Like 007, the Sport is a no-nonsense SUV opting for a mid-size profile and tight construction. While the LR2 and LR4 have the square jaws and bruising shoulders, the Range Rover line essays a more restrained structure. The Sport trims the low-hanging body of the Range Rover and stands taller than the Evoque, finding a sweet spot right in the middle.

Fans of the F-Type’s sound will be pleased to hear the three engine types available to the Sport. The grumble that is quickly becoming a Jaguar Land Rover staple is quite present, particularly in the 510-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 engine. Drivers will be pleased by futuristic touches like the massive 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and corresponding high-resolution display on the center console. It is fitting that a vehicle devoted to mastering the elements would have a calm, relatively sparse set of controls—no sense going out to conquer if you feel conquered as soon as you sit down.
