The Nissan GT-R is incredible, but this 1380-HP Nissan GT-R is a different beast entirely. Built to send all 1380 horsepower to the rear wheels, it blows the standard 545 horsepower GT-R off the road. And on March 3rd 2016, it broke the previous world record high-speed drift by sliding sideways across the tarmac at 189 mph.
Here’s the video:

The previous world record of 135mph, set in 2013 by Polish driver Jakub Przygonski, was quick – but the Nissan GT-R beats it by 54 mph. The driver behind the wheel of this specially-tuned GT-R is Japanese drift champion, R. Masato Kawabata.
Kawabata, age 38, has been drifting since he received his license at 18. He holds many first place wins in the D1 Grand Prix, and now he also holds the guinness world record for fastest drift.
Sadly, this 1380-HP rear-wheel drive Nissan GT-R is not for sale, but if you reach out to the GReddy team (who helped Nissan build their drift-monster), maybe they could help you out.
We’re hoping Nissan will release a video that’s less cinematic soon. While the one above is exciting, we think it should’ve shown a wide angle shot of the drift in real time, rather than slow-motion wheel spinning closeups.
Either way, congratulations to Nissan, and good luck to anyone out there looking to beat the record. No, seriously, good luck. We love it when car companies put aside their bottom line and do something amazing like this. Automotive big-wigs, take note.
